The recipient of the first Reid Gates Memorial Practice Greatness Scholarship is Makayla Kehmeier. This $2,200 scholarship honors the memory of Reid Gates, number 22, who was once a great leader at Cedaredge High School. Students are nominated by teachers or coaches for this award, and the criteria for receiving the scholarship include leadership in sports and academics, service to the school and community, and influencing the school in a positive way, all traits that Reid embodied.
This year’s recipient, Makayla, believes that “a true leader will practice and strive for greatness in their everyday lives not only for themselves but for the people around them.” Her teachers and coaches say that Makayla is a leader in athletics and in the classroom. She is always working to better herself, but still has time to help out and encourage her teammates and other students. She is very involved in our school, which is noticed and appreciated by many people. She also received the Female Athlete of the Year award, and has numerous athletic achievements under her belt including all-state in volleyball, and all conference in volleyball, basketball, and soccer. Makayla has a very bright future ahead of her and will continue to Practice Greatness throughout her life.
